Dental Crowns

Crowns work just like your natural tooth, allowing you to eat and speak as you did before crown placement. Dental crowns allow our patients to extend the life of their natural teeth for many years, if not a lifetime.

What is a Dental Crown?

As mentioned above, dental crowns are like caps that sit on the top of teeth that have been damaged beyond repair. Dental crowns look just like your real tooth and can be made of a variety of crown materials. Crowns can be made of:
•  Porcelain
•  Porcelain fused to metal
•  Ceramic
•  Gold
•  Metal
•  Ceramic fused to metal

When are Dental Crowns Recommended?

We will always let you know when we would recommend a dental crown. Some of the reasons that we recommend dental crowns be:
•  Teeth that are fractured or broken due to physical trauma
•  Severely decayed teeth
•  Teeth that have failed amalgam fillings no longer being able to support a dental filling
•  Cosmetic issues and imperfections with teeth
•  To protect a tooth after a root canal

What is the Dental Crown Placement Procedure?

It usually requires at least two trips to our office to have a dental crown planned and placed.

1.  First Visit: Shaping the tooth to fit the dental crown. The first visit to our office is when most of the work happens. We will begin the procedure by applying a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Once we are sure you are comfortable, we will prepare your tooth to receive the dental crown using a special dental drill. We will shape the tooth so that the dental crown will be able to fit over the top of it comfortably. To shape the tooth, we remove a portion of the enamel from it. We will take an impression of your tooth so that our dental lab will be able to craft a permanent dental crown that will fit perfectly into your bite. After we have the tooth shaped correctly, we will clean and dry it so that we can place the temporary crown over it to protect it while we are waiting for the permanent crown to be crafted at our dental lab. Cosmetic Dentistry generally to refers to any dental work that improves the appearance of teeth, gums and/or bite. It primarily focuses on improvement dental aesthetics in color, position, shape, size, alignment and overall smile appearance.

2.  Second Visit: Placing your custom dental crown. It can take a couple of weeks for the permanent dental crown to be crafted and sent back to us. Once it is ready, it will be time to return for your second appointment where Dr. Thomaszadeh will remove your temporary crown and place the permanent one using a special, long-lasting dental cement. We will ensure that the new crown fits into your bite properly and your procedure will be complete.
Composite Fillings are a great way to hide the fact that you have had a filling placed in a tooth, as they are specially made to match the color and look of your teeth perfectly.

A dental crown is a cap placed over an existing, shaped-down tooth in order to restore a damaged tooth.

Does the Dental Crown Procedure Hurt?

We will make sure the dental crown placement is as pain free as possible. We will walk you through every step of the way and explain how the process will work, so that you know exactly what is happening at all times. Your comfort is our top priority here at Sienella Thomaszadeh, DDS, which is why we offer several different sedation options for those who feel uncomfortable about having dental work done. If you would be more comfortable with a sedation option, like nitrous oxide let us know before your procedure begins, and we will be happy to accommodate you.
